That is the answer most pages about StoryTerrace cost do not give you. Two things follow from putting the two rate cards side by side. The tiers are identical in specification, so nothing is withheld from one market. And the sterling and dollar prices sit close to parity at current rates, which means the UK price is set locally rather than converted. If you are ordering across a border, order in the currency of the shop that serves you.

The Classic package includes a dedicated project manager and a senior writer. PRO adds a dedicated team of six professionals and a premium writer. Tailored is the open-ended tier: manuscript development, self publishing, multiple book formats, book strategy and marketing support, and in-person interviews, priced on request.

Is paying monthly cheaper than paying in full?

No. Five payments of $650 is $3,250, which is the all-in Classic price on the same page. Five payments of $4,800 is $24,000, which is the all-in PRO price. StoryTerrace confirms the mechanism in its FAQ: "You can split the total cost of your book package over 5 months without any interest" (StoryTerrace FAQ, retrieved 9 September 2026).

So the monthly figure is a payment plan, not a package. It does not discount the book, it does not add interest, and it does not leave a balloon payment at the end. It spreads the same total across the months the book is in production. This matters mainly for how the price is presented: "$650" is the number you will see first, and it is one fifth of what you are agreeing to.

The refund window is narrower than the payment window. StoryTerrace states that "if you haven't accepted a writer to work with you will be eligible for a refund within 30 days after first payment." Once you have accepted a writer, that door closes, and you are three or four instalments from a finished manuscript.

What actually drives the StoryTerrace price?

Four levers, in descending order of how much they move the number.

Interview hours. This is the real unit of pricing. Classic buys 4 to 10 hours of recorded interviews. PRO buys 10 or more. Everything downstream, the transcript volume, the manuscript length, the page count, follows from how many hours of someone talking the writer has to work with. StoryTerrace's own FAQ describes the interview load per package directly: "around 3-4 hours" at the entry level, "around 5-6 hours across two sessions" in the middle, "or up to 10 hours" at the top.

Writer seniority. StoryTerrace runs a tiered roster and says so: "Critically Acclaimed" writers with extensive publication history, "Senior" writers with published experience, and "Junior" writers with less professional experience but strong writing. Classic ships with a senior writer, PRO with a premium writer. This is the lever most buyers underestimate, because it is the one that decides whether the finished prose reads like a commercial memoir or like a competent transcript tidy-up.

Length. Page count is not a slider you set independently. It is the output of hours and word count. A 60-page book and a 125-page book are different products because the second one required more of everything upstream.

The production team. Classic gives you a writer and a project manager. PRO gives you six professionals. The jump from $3,250 to $24,000 is not four times the writing. It is a different operating model, with a publishing and promotion plan attached.

What does StoryTerrace cost per word?

Nobody publishes this figure, so here is the arithmetic, with the method stated so you can check it.

StoryTerrace's Swift listing gives both numbers for the same book: 60 pages and 7,500 words, which is 125 words a page. Its older published tiers implied 125 to 175 words a page across the range. Applying that band to the current page counts gives the following.

Two conclusions, and the first one runs against the "StoryTerrace is expensive" framing.

Classic is competitively priced per word. At $0.15 to $0.43 a word it comes in under the $0.51 average that Reedsy publishes for biographies and memoirs. If you were going to hire a freelance ghostwriter for a short family book anyway, Classic is not a premium on that market. It is a packaged version of it, with a project manager and a printing pipeline included.

PRO is not priced on words at all. At roughly $1.10 to $1.54 a word at its floor page count, PRO costs two to three times the freelance average. That is not a markup on writing. It is a team of six, a premium writer, twenty copies and, at the Tailored end, a publishing and marketing plan. Judge it as an agency engagement, not as a manuscript purchase.

What is not included in the StoryTerrace price?

The rate card is honest about what it covers. It is quieter about the edges, and the edges are where budgets move.

Revisions past the first round. StoryTerrace states: "After you receive your first proof you have one round of corrections." Further rounds need editor approval and carry extra charges. One round is not unusual for the industry, but it is worth knowing before you receive a proof that reads less like your parent than you hoped.

Extra copies. Each package includes its stated number of printed copies, "but extra copies can be ordered at an additional cost." The price is not published. It depends on package and quantity, and you contact them for a quote. If the point of the book is that eleven grandchildren each get one, get that quote before you sign, not after.

Time overruns. StoryTerrace aims "to finish all projects within 4-7 months," with an extended option to nine months. Beyond nine months, extension fees apply. The clock is partly yours: interviews have to be scheduled, proofs have to be read.

Work outside the contract. One Trustpilot reviewer describes being charged "£3 per word for anything outside my contract." That is one customer's account of one project and not a published rate, but it is a useful shape to have in mind. The contract defines a word count, and words beyond it are billable.

Read the diagonal rather than the rows. The cheapest way in has gone from $2,700 to $3,250, about 20 per cent over three years. The $4,950 and $9,050 rungs are gone, so the gap a buyer now has to jump is $3,250 to $24,000 with nothing in between. And the 2021 premium tier at $27,500 for a 60,000-word book has effectively become today's Tailored quote.

If you were given a figure between $4,000 and $9,000 by an older article or an old quote, that ladder no longer exists.

Why do other pages quote different StoryTerrace prices?

Because most of them are old, and a couple of them are guessing.

The package names in circulation (Junior Writer, Professional Writer, Executive Writer, or Compact, Complete and Novella) come from earlier versions of the product.
