There is no single best one. There is a best one for a given storyteller and budget. Here is the field, cheapest first, with what each actually does.

Why nearly every "best memoir writing service" list is written by one of the services

This matters more than any row in the table above, so it goes before the comparison rather than after it.

We read the pages currently ranking for this query. The one at the top is published by Oscar Ghostwriting and ranks Oscar Ghostwriting first, with no disclosure that the publisher and the winner are the same company. Two more of the top ten are published by ghostwriting firms using the identical ten-item template with their own name moved to the top slot. A fourth assigns numerical scores out of ten to services whose prices it never mentions.

Two consequences follow, and both cost readers money.

The lists only contain agencies. If the publisher sells $50,000 ghostwriting, a $69 service that ships a real hardcover is not a competitor worth naming. So the entire guided tier, which is what most families actually buy, is missing from the results. A reader who trusts the ranking concludes the floor for a memoir is $25,000. The floor is $69.

No prices means no comparison. A "top 10" with no numbers cannot be checked. The one price figure we found across those pages was a range in a FAQ, $25,000 to $150,000, unattributed. Every number on this page has a link and a date next to it, including ours.

Before comparing features, name what each service actually is. Everything else, including the price, follows from the mechanism.

The storyteller sits for a set number of recorded interviews. A professional writer transcribes them and writes the manuscript. An editor reviews it. A project manager runs the schedule. You receive a finished book and, apart from interviews and approvals, do no work.

You are buying human hours. A senior writer spends hundreds of hours on one memoir, and that is the entire explanation for why this tier costs 100 times what the tier below it costs.

Model 2. Your storyteller writes it, prompted weekly

A question arrives by email or text every week for a year. The storyteller types an answer. At the end of the year the answers are laid out and printed as a hardcover. There is no writer, no interviewer, and usually no editor.

You are buying a prompt schedule and a print run. It is the cheapest path to a real book by an order of magnitude, and it depends entirely on the storyteller being someone who will write.

Model 3. An AI interviews, an AI drafts, you edit

The storyteller talks instead of typing. Software transcribes the conversation and drafts chapters from it. Somebody in the family reads the drafts and corrects them. The book prints when the family approves it.

This is the tier the search results are about. Here is what the published rate cards say.

The monthly figures are payment plans, not discounts. Five payments of $650 is $3,250, the same all-in price on the same page. Nothing is cheaper for paying monthly.

Per-page billing is worth doing the arithmetic on. The Writers For Hire publishes page rates rather than project prices, so a full memoir costs whatever the length works out to. A 60,000-word memoir is 3,500 words in the first block, then roughly 162 to 226 more pages at 250 to 350 words each. At the published rates that is $2,250 plus 162 pages at $180, or $31,410 at the bottom, up to $6,800 plus 226 pages at $400, or $97,200 at the top. That is our own calculation from their published rates, not a quote from them, but it puts a real bracket on a firm that advertises no project price.

Those brackets agree with the only independent survey data in the category. The Editorial Freelancers Association's 2026 Rate Chart has a memoir-specific ghostwriting row at 50 cents to $1.00 a word, or $80 to $100 an hour, which is $30,000 to $60,000 on a 60,000-word book. That figure comes from more than 1,100 working editorial professionals reporting what they charged, rather than from a firm's marketing page. How this tier fails. It fails on price, and it fails silently. Families who want a parent's stories captured before they are gone contact an agency, hear $25,000, and stop. The memoir does not get made at a lower price point, because the reader concluded from the ranking they read that no lower price point exists. That is the specific harm in publishing top-ten lists with no numbers in them.

It also fails when the storyteller is frail. A ghostwritten memoir at this tier is a five-month production with a fixed interview schedule. If the reason you are looking is a recent diagnosis, five months is a real constraint, and how long a memoir takes covers the timelines honestly.

The tier the agency listicles leave out. All three of these ship a genuine printed hardcover.

Read the page counts as ceilings, not deliveries. Every number in that column is a cap on what the vendor will print, not a description of what arrives. A storyteller who answers twenty of fifty-two prompts in two paragraphs each produces a book of roughly thirty pages, and the 480-page allowance is irrelevant. The variable that decides the thickness of the book is how much the storyteller wrote, and no service in this tier controls that variable.

Check the renewal terms. Storyworth Unlimited is $199 for the first year and then renews automatically at $99 a year until cancelled. Basic and Color do not auto-charge. Meminto and My Life In A Book are one-time purchases with no renewal at all. A gift-buyer who wants a one-off present should know which of those they are buying.

How this tier fails. It fails when the storyteller will not write. This is the single most common outcome, and it is not a criticism of the products: the mechanism requires an 80-year-old to sit down and type for a year, and a great many people who are delighted to talk about their lives for three hours will not do that. The prompts keep arriving, the answers stop, and the book that gets printed is a third of the book that was imagined. Making a memoir without writing is the right next read if this is the situation you are in.

AI interview services: $99 to $199

The newest tier, and the one our own service sits in. Two products worth knowing.

Remento ($99 for the first year). Weekly prompts arrive by email or text. The storyteller taps the link and talks, with no app and no login. Remento's Speech-to-Story feature converts each recording into written narrative, and the family can keep either the transcript or the flowing version. The printed hardcover runs up to 380 pages in full color, with QR codes on the pages that play the original audio. Extra copies are $69, and renewal after the first year is $99 a year or $12 a month. Every session is transcribed. The AI drafts each chapter from the transcripts. The sticker price hides how different these tiers are. Cost per page, at each service's own stated maximum, makes it visible.

This is our arithmetic on the published prices and page ceilings, not a figure any vendor advertises. Two honest caveats come with it. The ceilings in the cheap tiers are rarely reached, so the real cost per page is higher than the number shown. What you actually own when the book is done

Four questions, all of them separate, and none of them answered in a features grid.

The copyright. Ask directly who holds it, in writing, before paying. A ghostwriting contract normally assigns copyright to the client as work for hire, but "normally" is not a contract term. Read the clause.

The raw recordings. If the storyteller is elderly or ill, the audio may eventually matter more to the family than the printed book. What happens when the subscription lapses. For one-time purchases this question does not arise. For annual products it decides whether the account is an archive or a rental. Ask before the renewal date, not after.
